Nylon (coil) zippers are the most widely produced zipper type in the world — light, flexible and economical, used on apparel, bags, luggage and home textiles. The short version: how a nylon zipper line flows
A nylon zipper is built in two stages. First the long-chain is produced — a continuous coil-zipper roll. Then finishing machines turn that roll into finished zippers with sliders and stops, cut to length. The line is modular: you can begin with the core machines and add downstream capacity as orders grow.

The core machines, one by one
1. Tape weaving
Everything starts with the tape. A needle loom weaves the polyester tape that carries the teeth. Tape width, density and the cord edge are matched to the zipper size (for example #3, #5, #8, #10). Good, consistent tape is the foundation of a smooth zipper.
2. Nylon teeth coiling — the heart of the line
This is what makes a "coil" zipper a coil zipper. The coiling machine takes a single nylon monofilament, winds it into a continuous coil that forms the interlocking teeth, and fixes that coil onto the tape. Unlike resin zippers (whose teeth are injection-moulded) or metal zippers (whose teeth are stamped from wire), nylon teeth are formed by coiling — which is why nylon zippers are light and flexible.
3. Roller dyeing
The chain is dyed to colour on a roller dyeing machine. Producing the long-chain in standard colours and dyeing to order is what lets a factory offer hundreds of colour options without holding huge finished-goods stock.
4. Long-chain winding
The finished chain is wound into measured rolls for storage, bulk sale or feeding the finishing line. Many factories sell long-chain rolls in bulk to garment workshops that do their own finishing.

5. Gapping
A gapping machine removes the coil teeth at precise intervals, creating the "gaps" that define where each finished zipper begins and ends and where the slider and stops will sit. Accurate gapping is essential — it sets the finished length and the alignment of every later step.
6. Slider / head mounting
A head-mounting machine fits the complete slider (the whole head, not just the pull) onto the chain. Different machines suit different pulls: an in-line feeder handles common slider pulls, while a side-feed machine handles fancy or irregularly shaped pulls.
7. Top and bottom stops
Stops keep the slider on the zipper. For closed-end nylon zippers, a bottom-stop machine fixes the bottom stop, and a top-stop machine fixes the top stops. Top stops can be applied with aluminium wire, or as transparent (heat-fused nylon) stops for a near-invisible finish. The right stop type depends on the end product and the look you want.
8. Cutting
A cutting machine cuts the chain into finished zippers at the gapped points. Standard cutters serve most orders; ultrasonic cutting adds extra edge precision and seals the cut for higher-spec work.
9. Quality testing
Before packing, finished zippers are checked on testing equipment — pull strength, reciprocating (open/close) endurance and slider smoothness — so defects are caught in the factory, not by your customer.
How big a line do you actually need?
You do not have to buy everything at once. A practical way to start:
- Buy long-chain, finish in-house: skip weaving/coiling/dyeing at first, buy long-chain rolls, and invest in gapping, slider mounting, stops and cutting. Lowest entry cost, fastest to running.
- Full nylon line: add weaving, coiling and dyeing to control quality, colour and cost end to end — the route for a real zipper factory.
- Multi-material factory: add separate metal and resin lines later; the finishing machines and know-how carry over.
